3 Reasons Everyone (Even Happy People) Should Go to Therapy

Most people these days would agree that therapy is a useful treatment for anyone who has a major problem. If your friend was struggling with depression, an anxiety disorder, or PTSD, for example, you would likely encourage them to talk to a therapist. But for many, the idea of going to therapy yourself doesn’t occur unless a significant or sudden life issue arises, like a family death or ending marriage.

The truth is, therapy is an incredibly helpful tool for everyone, even if you consider yourself mentally healthy. Let’s take a look at a few of the benefits you and everyone else can experience from seeing a therapist.

1) Learn healthy coping mechanisms.

Most of the coping strategies you use in your adult life are ones you learned in childhood and adolescence. Although you may not realize it, many of these strategies are often unhealthy or not conducive to who you are now as an adult. Eating junk food when you’re stressed or holding in your emotions so you don’t upset anyone are common examples.

In therapy, you will learn how to recognize these habits, reverse them, and replace them with new, healthier, and more beneficial ones.

2) Set aside time to talk about what’s on your mind.

When most people want to talk about a problem or something on their mind, they usually turn to friends or family. While this is, of course, what trusted confidants are for, treating your loved ones like therapists is both unfair and unhealthy. Or, some people take the opposite approach of bottling up any emotions that start to rise to the surface.

Therapy offers a safe, dedicated, and nonjudgmental space to regularly talk through your problems, worries, emotions, hopes, goals, and whatever else you need to get off your chest.

3) Grow as a person.

Therapy is a place to explore your mind at new depths and get to know yourself better. As you gain more insight into who you are, you will learn how to develop into the person you’ve always wanted to be and grow to the next level. A trained therapist will help provide the understanding and tools you need to achieve this.
